Bone cancer is rare and accounts for less than 1% of all new tumors. Not all bone tumors are fatal in fact benign (non cancerous) abnormalities are more common than malignant ones. Most bone cancers are secondary and have been spread from another site. Primary bone cancer which starts in the bone is quite rare constituting less than one per cent of all malignant tumors. They are more common in males, especially in children and adolescents. The most common type of primary bone cancer is osteosarcoma.

Bone cancer can form in the new soft tissue of a child or in the mature bone tissue of an adult. The usual treatment is surgery, sometimes replacing the bone with metal or plastic. This method is used very often in cases of Ewing's Sarcoma, which is a very fast growing bone cancer of children where the growth can be observed hourly.

Underlying causes behind bone Cancer is still unclear. However, there are certain risk factors that have been identified. Most of them suggest that Estrogen, female hormone, plays an imperative role in development and progress of this cancer. It's known that women, having menstrual period for the first time before 11 or at a very later stage in their life, are more prone for developing this disease.

Although bone cancer does not have a clearly defined cause, researchers have identified several factors that increase the likelihood of developing these tumors. A small number of bone cancers are due to heredity. There are no specific causes for this cancer. But a few factors may result in bone cancer; the effect of radiation or chemotherapy performed earlier, genetic or may be hereditary.

The prognosis for patients depend upon the location, age, involvement, and general health of the patient. In older men, this form of cancer is often secondary to prostate cancer and in these cases the patient has lost so much vitality that the best that can be done is to keep the patient as comfortable as possible.

The exact causes of bone cancer still seem to be a matter of research and study. The symptoms of bone cancer are linked to the position of the cancer-affected bone in the body. One of the symptoms of bone cancer is incidence of swelling or tenderness or pain in the area affected by bone cancer. The formation of a lump is another indication of bone cancer. Though the detection of a bone cancer related lump is a bit difficult in the initial stages of bone cancer, the lump can sometimes be felt (due to the restriction in movement that it causes) when the bone cancer occurs at joints (e.g. knee joints).

The tumor within the bone weakens the body in overall and specific ways. Fatigue has already been mentioned but the breaking of a bone is common from even a slight fall or accident. The tumor weakens the bone and thus a break can occur, sometimes from even something simple like standing. In most cases, bone fractures occur more in the lower rather than the upper body of the patient.
